Hillsborough Explorer Scout Unit

Hillsborough Explorer Scout Unit was founded in 2002 when the Venture Scout Section was replaced by the new Explorer and Scout Network Sections. Hillsborough Explorers superceded Stag Venture Scouts, a prominent Sheffield Venture Scout Unit attached to  the 150th (Wadsley Church) Scout Group, one of the oldest and largest Scout Groups in Sheffield.

Since our conception in 2002 Hillsborough Explorers has provided adventure and excitement for young people from the Hillsborough, Wadsley, Worrall and Oughtibridge areas of Sheffield. Many of our members build their confidence (and their CVs) by volunteering as junior leaders with other Scout sections and we are proud of the large proportion of these that go on to become adult leaders when they turn 18 years old. A   high number of our members also go on to achieve their Queen’s Scout Award – scouting’s highest honour – and attend a special St Georges Day Parade at Windsor Palace.

Hillsborough Explorer Unit is actually run by Sheffield Hallam District. However, many Explorer Units such as ours are partnered with a local Scout Group – in our case the 150th (Wadsley Church) – which provide a space for the Unit to meet and a steady intake of new members. As Explorers is district run, members have the chance to meet and work with other Explorer Scouts in their District and are eligible to take part in a great many more activities.

Typical explorer activities include international camps and expeditions, exclusive district camps and competitions, canal boat trips, survival weekends, laser tag, outdoor climbing, sailing, kayaking and mountaineering.
