Summer camp at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in Switzerland. We joined 40 Scouts from the 150th (Wadsley Church) Sheffield Scout Group for this once in a lifetime alpine adventure.
Scouts from the Wadsley, Worrall and Hillsborough area have been busy collecting food items in the run up to Christmas in support of the Cathedral Archer Project, a Sheffield based charity that helps feed homeless and vulnerable people across the city.
The Scouts, from Hillsborough Explorer Unit and 150th Sheffield Scout Group, have collected over 200 items of food as part of a food drive on behalf of the Sheffield homeless charity. The youngsters, comprising Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts aged 5-18 years old, donated items of food from home, which will be delivered to the project in time for Christmas.
The Cathedral Archer project was founded in 1990 as a breakfast project and now works with homeless and vulnerable people in Sheffield to help them find pathways away from homelessness and exclusion. The project provides free meals from their purpose built premises attached to Sheffield Cathedral and relies heavily on public donations.
Tracy Viner, from the Cathedral Archer Project said: “This hard work and support makes such a difference to our clients. The food is vital but the knowledge that these young people have being thinking of them has a huge impact too. Without the food donations, the money we raise would have to be diverted away from the activities and classes we run to help people gain skills and knowledge and move on. Thank you to everyone that has been involved.”
David Wright, Group Scout Leader at 150th Sheffield Scout Group said: “It’s been really great to see all our young members pull together to support this worthwhile cause. One of the key aims of scouting is to support your local community and this is even more important in today’s economic climate. Christmas is a time for giving and thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves.”
Hillsborough Explorers provided the food again this year at the 150th (Wadsley Church) Scout Group Bonfire. The outside BBQ went down really well in spite of the rain. The event also featured a giant outdoor screening of selected photos from this year’s scouting activities, as well as the usual bonfire and fire work display. Thanks to everyone who came and helped make it a really special night.
