On Monday 20th October we took our Explorers for a rock climbing session at Awesome Walls indoor climbing centre in Sheffield. The previous week we had gone through some of the theory behind climbing and this week saw the practical application of what they had learned. For those who wish to persue climbing as a hobby we plan to take a a small group out to do some climbing on real rock in the Peak District and help them earn their Climber badge.
Well done to team No Hopers and team Dom Joly who both took part in Xploreration 2014. Xplorerartion is a county wide activity in which teams of 4 -6, using public transport and their feet only, have to visit as many places as possible from a list of ‘sites of interest’ around South Yorkshire, gaining points for each site visited. The more awkward a site is to visit via public transport, the more points it’s worth.
Congratulations to team No Hopers who came an impressive 3rd out of 14 teams.
To kick off the new term we organised a welcome back rafting competition at Underbank Activity Centre in Stocksbridge. The leaders came first in the raft building competition for the second year running, quickly followed by a team made up of some of our newest members. However, we saw some very impressive and imaginative raft designs this year. Who knows, maybe next year one of the Explorer teams might beat actually the leaders.
To kick off our new term we visited Underbank Activity Centre in Stocksbridge for an afternoon of raft building and other team building exercises, followed by a (somewhat successful) BBQ by the reservoir. The leader team won the rafting race with a simple yet effective design inspired by many a camp at Walesby Forest. Well done to everyone who took part and for some really impressive raft designs. Let’s make this year our best yet!
This week’s activity was climbing at the Foundry Climbing Centre in Sheffield. Everyone had a go at belaying someone and climbing a variety of routes up to a difficulty rating of 5+. We finished the session with a go in the bouldering wall.
Hillsborough Explorers provided the food again this year at the 150th (Wadsley Church) Scout Group Bonfire. The outside BBQ went down really well in spite of the rain. The event also featured a giant outdoor screening of selected photos from this year’s scouting activities, as well as the usual bonfire and fire work display. Thanks to everyone who came and helped make it a really special night.
